Assistive Technology Re-Use and Recycling Summit<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868963/1404208/goto:http:/www.washingtonaccessfund.org/about_access_fund/newsletter_7-11.php%23reuse>

[cid:image006.jpg at 01CC4537.55685340]Join us in Seattle on August 10, 2011 for the AT Re-Use and Recycling Summit! Hosted by the Washington Assistive Technology Act Program ( WATAP<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868964/1404208/goto:http:/watap.org/>) and Bridge Disability Ministries<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868965/1404208/goto:http:/www.bridgemin.org/mobility/index.html> in collaboration with the Pass It On Center<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868966/1404208/goto:http:/www.passitoncenter.org/>, this exciting all day Summit will give participants an opportunity to explore strategies for effectively recycling assistive technologies to better serve Washington residents who need free and low-cost devices. The Summit represents the first step in organizing a statewide assistive technology reuse action and exchange network! A limited number of travel scholarships are available.

For more information, to register, and to request accommodations, contact Samantha Murphy at WATAP at smurphy3 at uw.edu<mailto:smurphy3 at uw.edu> or by phone at 1-800-214-8731.

Re-Use and Recycling: What's it all about? Assistive technology reuse and recycling programs are designed to get AT devices out of the closet and into the hands of people who need them - especially low -income individuals! Related goals include emergency preparedness (e.g., establishing a system to meet the needs of wheelchair and other AT users in the case of major disasters) and protecting the environment by keeping AT out of landfills.

There are several types of "re-use" programs:

 * Online AT exchanges offer a virtual marketplace for buying, selling, trading and donating Assistive Devices. Examples include Washington's Evergreen AT Exchange<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868967/1404208/goto:https:/greenat.watap.org/> and AT School Share<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868968/1404208/goto:http:/atschoolshare.massmatch.org/>, an online inventory and AT device exchange program used by school districts in several states.
 * Device recycling and refurbishing programs which accept donated items and give or loan them to individuals and families who need them. Some agencies (such as Bridge Ministries) also repair and/or refurbish the devices before passing them along. Check out the Access Fund's resource list on Medical Equipment Loan Closets<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868969/1404208/goto:http:/www.washingtonaccessfund.org/resources/medical_equipment_loan_closets.php>.
 * Assistive Technology Lease/Loan Programs, such as the Access Fund's Closed Circuit TV Rental Program<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868970/1404208/goto:http:/www.washingtonaccessfund.org/cctv_rentals/cctv_rentals.php>, which provides affordable, long-term, low-cost access to CCTV magnifiers. This is a re-use program to the extent that rental units are sent out to other users upon return so that any particular unit benefits two, three or even more individuals during its lifetime.
 * Device Disposal programs designed primarily to ensure that devices that are no longer usable are disposed of in an environmentally appropriate way.

There are some incredible models of AT re-use throughout the United States. The Summit will provide a unique opportunity to learn about these models and to be a part of the conversation as we develop and expand such programs in Washington State.

Who should attend the Summit? Nonprofit, for-profit or government agencies (including school districts) interested in promoting assistive technology reuse and recycling in Washington State - whether it be wheelchairs, vision aids, hearing aids, computers or other types of assistive devices.

[cid:image006.jpg at 01CC4537.55685340]Need help paying for laptops, e-readers, iPads, wheelchair copays, hearing aids or other assistive technologies (AT)? Have you heard about the Access Fund's Individual Development Account (IDA)? IDAs are matched savings accounts where participants can earn a grant by saving on a monthly basis. In our IDA program, individuals with disabilities can earn up to $4,000 (depending on how much they save) to help pay for AT. If they save the maximum amount, that means they'll have $8,000 to go towards AT.

Individuals ages 15 and up can start saving as well as parents of children with disabilities. This program is geared towards low-income households, to see if you qualify please visit our website's IDA page<http://e2ma.net/go/7135154627/208617384/223868972/1404208/goto:http:/www.washingtonaccessfund.org/ida_program/ida_program.php>.
