Taking the bus instead of a car is one way to reduce unhealthy air

Snohomish County, Wash. - The Puget Sound region isn't just experiencing record-high temperatures this week. It's also dealing with high levels of ozone pollution, or smog.

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency is forecasting high levels of smog, expected to reach levels "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" through the weekend. The cause is the combination of hot weather and a stagnant weather pattern. Add to that the high volume of cars on the road headed to the beach, on vacation or to work, and you have plenty of dirty air out there at a time when a lot of people are trying to enjoy the summer.

But you can help. By riding Community Transit, Everett Transit or any public transit provider, you're automatically helping reduce the number of harmful agents in our air. Community Transit buses use ultra low-sulfur diesel fuel and each bus is fitted with a particulate trap to reduce the amount of pollution released into the atmosphere. Everett Transit also runs three hybrid diesel-electric buses, which burn less fuel.

Public transit vehicles emit 95 percent less carbon monoxide, 90 percent less volatile organic compounds and half as much carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide per passenger mile as private vehicles.

Getting around on public transit is easy. Call Community Transit at (425) 353-RIDE or (800) 562-1375 for bus information, or (888) 814-1300 for carpool or vanpool information, or use the online Trip Planner at www.communitytransit.org. The agency has 33 local routes within Snohomish County and 31 commuter routes to Seattle, the UW and the Eastside.

Everett Transit offers extensive local bus coverage throughout Everett to direct connections in and out of the city via regional transportation services at Everett Station. For information about Everett Transit services, please visit www.everetttransit.org or call customer service at (425) 257-7777.
