Agency Creates Facebook Profile

Interactive site allows online dialogue about transit services

Snohomish County, Wash. - First it was a MySpace page. Then a YouTube video. Now Community Transit has created a profile on the popular social networking site Facebook to help with its outreach and communication efforts.

The Community Transit Facebook profile is a dynamic way of sharing information and agency initiatives with riders and the general public who are linked in to the site. Facebook users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school and region to connect and interact with other people.

Using this two-way communication model, visitors to the Community Transit profile can share comments and feedback on the agency's service and plans. People can also become a "fan" of the agency, which brings information directly to that person's own profile and allows that user's friends to see their interest in Community Transit, thus creating a viral communication tool.

"Community Transit is always looking for new ways to reach out to riders and to keep them informed, especially with all our exciting projects in line for 2009," said CEO Joyce Eleanor. "The Facebook profile serves as a complement to our website by bringing information directly to interested audiences on their personal profiles. The technology's there, so we're using it!"

"Fans" of Community Transit will be able to learn about upcoming projects such as Swift bus rapid transit and the ORCA smart card, and can check out the events calendar to learn when and where Community Transit is active in their community. Visitors can also take part in ongoing discussions and have a chance to win a free monthly bus pass.

Current Facebook users who want to become "fans" of Community Transit can search for the Community Transit profile on the site, and click the link to "become a fan." To view the Facebook profile without joining the social network, visit this URL:

Community Transit strives to help Puget Sound commuters think transit first. With an electronic alert system for instant rider information and one of the nation's first double decker transit buses, the agency is a leader in finding new ways to make alternative transportation an attractive option. Call Community Transit at (425) 353-RIDE or (800) 562-1375 for bus information, or (888) 814-1300 for carpool or vanpool information, or go to www.communitytransit.org.
