Subject: [greatcity-news] May Report on Priorities and Upcoming Events

Dear Great City Supporters,

Things are moving quickly with our three priority campaigns, and we wanted to give you an update, as well as let you know about related events (including one this Thursday - see attachment).

Green Infrastructure - Define and fund a new round of green investments.

At the urging of Great City and others, the City Council appointed a citizens committee to recommend a renewal of the Parks Levy. There is one more public meeting for the citizens committee, so please consider attending and sharing your views with the citizens committee on Monday, June 2nd, 7:00-9:30pm, Alki Community Center, 5817 S.W. Stevens St, Seattle, WA 98116.

To learn more about the campaign for new parks, or if you are interested in volunteering, visit our website.

More Housing -- to serve a diversity of income levels, in walkable, environmentally sustainable neighborhoods.

There remains a tremendous amount of interest in the shape of future development in Seattle.

The council is currently considering the Multifamily Property Tax Exemption to encourage affordable multifamily housing. See our position here, and please contact City Council to urge them to pass an effective incentive to create affordable housing.

Discussions about the future of South Lake Union continue. This Thursday Councilmembers Sally Clark and Richard Conlin are hosting a brownbag luncheon for the Uptown Queen Anne/South Lake Union Community Stakeholder Group to discuss their Urban Vision for Uptown & South Lake Union. Seattle Great City Initiative Director, Michael McGinn, will be on a panel discussion at the luncheon. Thursday, May 29th , 12:00-1:00, Seattle City Hall, City Council Chambers, 600 Fourth Avenue

Great City will be hosting its own Brownbag Lunch Discussion on June 12, with a presentation from Matt Roewe entitled: Bread Loaves and Pencils: Livable High-rise Development in Seattle's South Lake Union. Matt has put together an informative slideshow on how other cities have faced similar challenges. Thursday, June 12th , 12:00-1:30, Triad Urban Center, NW Corner of 3rd and Cherry,

Regarding housing choices in neighborhoods, there are two more presentations worth putting on your calendar.

On June 2nd in Bertha Knight Landes room from 5-7pm there is a presentation by visitors from Portland on the use of pre-approved design templates for new townhomes.

And on June 23rd, please join us for a special brownbag lunch cosponsored by the Department of Planning and Development and Seattle Great City Initiative to learn about Owen Richards Architects and Hybrid Architects awarding winning 99k House design for an affordable, sustainable house prototype for the Gulf Coast Region. Monday, June 23rd ,12:00-1:30, City Hall, Bertha Landes Room

Transportation Campaign - Streets for people, and better local transit:

Our Transportation Committee is putting together a campaign to work for people-friendly streets and better local transit to serve all our neighborhoods. We are particularly interested in helping support efforts to open up streets to people over the summer as part of the Mayor's "Give Your Car the Summer Off" program. In that spirit, consider joining our Street Transformation Competition at our first annual Summer Street Scene Party on July 17. If you are interested in competing in the street transformation, email Allison. To learn how you can get involved with our transportation committee email Nate.

If you like what we are doing, please consider becoming a Great City Supporter -- http://www.greatcity.org/contribute. Thanks for your interest, and for all the work you do.
