Subject: NCD meeting in Seattle July 14-16
As you know, the NCD will conduct its next quarterly meeting at the
Renaissance Seattle Hotel, 515 Madison Street, Seattle, WA, beginning
Monday morning, July 14 and ending Wednesday afternoon, July 16. We will
probably host an evening reception on Monday or Tuesday after our
meeting as well.
Wherever we travel, it is important that we hear from the 'local'
community about issues of importance, and we want to be sure that such
issues are a large part of our agenda while in the Pacific Northwest.
The time is quickly approaching for us to be finalizing our proposed
list of subjects to discuss, as the executive committee will be
approving them in June. If you have not already done so, I would
encourage you to let me know about issues that you feel are important
for NCD to be aware of. The names of knowledgeable individuals to share
information about this subject, including their contact information,
will make our job much easier.
We have already heard from Kelly Buckland, in his dual roles as
president of the National Council on Independent Living and as Executive
Director for the Idaho SILC, about the need to address the rights of
parents with disabilities. I also know that many state laws that
provide protections for different segments of the disability community
are being rapidly dismantled by judges, state legislators and governors
across the country, and local information about how this trend has
impacted people within your states should be of great interest.
For those organizations that deal with disability issues and that are
located in the Seattle area, we would also like to know about the
availability of highly qualified local CART providers and what their
going rates might be. If possible, we try to make best use of those
local resources and always end up hiring our interpreters that way. Is
there a registry for sign language interpreters in King County? Contact
information would definitely be appreciated.
Feel free to share this request with your peers, as we want to make the
best use of our trip to this area. I look forward to seeing all of you
again soon, and hope that it will be a nice warm summer. If you want to
check out a recent NCD agenda, please go to our website and review what
we did in Arlington last month. You can also browse through our recent
reports, and that might help you decide what new issues we should be
taking on now.
Thanks again,
Mike
