Agency Profile: The mission of the Washington State School for the
Blind is to provide specialized quality educational services to visually
impaired/blind youth ages birth-21 within the state of Washington. Our
purpose is to serve as a statewide demonstration and resource center and
provide direct/indirect services to students both on campus and in the
children's local communities. Each employee plays a critical role for
the school and our students. We value our employees and continuously
challenge them to improve the way we provide service to our students and
the community.
Position Profile: The Washington State School for the Blind currently
has 3 on-call Residential Life Counselor (RLC) positions open. The
incumbents of on-call positions are called in the event of full-time
staff absences and there is no guarantee for hours. These positions
provide care, counseling and guidance to Washington State School for the
Blind students for the purpose of facilitating student independence and
success. The successful candidates will have the following principal
responsibilities: Under the direction of the Assistant Principal of
Evening and After-School Programs, this employee will perform the
following duties, including but not limited to...
* Provide counseling and guidance to students for the purpose of
facilitating student independence.
* Create and maintain a safe environment for the students.
* Provide assistance and accompany students on outings as
necessary.
* Provide housekeeping and cooking duties.
* Provide regular communication to supervisor and co-workers
regarding student related activities, behaviors and progress.
* May be required to lift or move students with or without
reasonable accommodation.
* May be required to assist students with toileting or hygiene
needs.
* Assist students with daily planned outings, school work, or
offer general advice as necessary.
Required Qualifications
* Valid Washington State ID or driver's license and minimum age of
18.
* Basic Microsoft Office software skills
* Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
* Ability to explain sometimes complex or technical information
regarding rules, rights, regulations, policies, procedures, programs and
services.
* Ability to respond to difficult, stressful or sensitive
interpersonal situations in ways that will reduce or minimize potential
conflict.
* Have or the ability to obtain Braille certification.
* Have or the ability to obtain First Aid/CPR card and Food
Handler's card.
* Willingness and abilities to work with students with physical
and developmental disabilities.
* Must be able to ride public transportation for reasonable
distances and ability to walk long distances.
* Ability to lift or assist students as necessary.
* Willingness and ability to maintain good working relationships
with staff, parents and students.
* Must pass state and federal criminal background checks.
Desired Qualifications
* Experience working with Blind or Visually Impaired people
* Braille certification
* Experience working in educational environment
* Two years of college with major emphasis in education, child
development, or related subject OR one year of experience working in
instructional setting with children
Compensation: $13.98 - $18.10 per hour
