Washington State's first Safe Routes to School Month is happening in May!     
    
Safe Routes to School Month is being coordinated and sponsored by the Center for Safe Routes to School in Washington State. The Center is a partnership of the Bicycle Alliance of Washington and Feet First, with funding provided by the Washington State Department of Transportation.  

The Center provides the necessary tools, resources, and assistance to communities across the State in order to continue building the Safe Routes to School movement. 


What is Safe Routes to School Month?
Activities will include bike rodeos, walking campaigns, and other community events across Washington. The State Center has been working with eighteen community coordinators to distribute fliers, posters, signs, walk to school backpacks, and "Discover Your World: The Game". If you would like Safe Routes to School materials for your school or family please contact ellie at feetfirst.info or call 206.652.2310.

What is Safe Routes to School?
Safe Routes to School (SRtS) is a national movement  to increase the number of students walking and biking to school safely. 

Through a collaborative community effort, SRtS programs typically address:

  a.. the safety of our streets and communities 
  b.. the health and fitness of our children

  c.. traffic congestion  
  d.. air quality and other environmental issues 
Successful programs typically include:

  a.. Families: children, parents, guardians, neighbors, and extended family 
  b.. Schools: teachers, PTAs, administrators, staff

  c.. Health Professionals: public health, school nurses, clinicians

  d.. Design Professionals: engineers, planners, artists and other designers 
  e.. Public Safety Professionals: fire fighters, law enforcement, crossing guards
