Jedi,
Good for you. When I lived in Olympia I was precinct Chairman for my
precinct for 8 years (1974-1982, at least roughly those years). I don't
recall that much chaos, but elections, during those years, were not that
contested. At a caucus, our election process, can be seen at its best
and worse. Wait until you get to the next level. They should be organized
and better controlled, but plenty of politics. It is an event, I believe,
everyone should try to participate in, at least once.
Bob

Hey all.
I just got done running a precinct caucus, and it was crazy. Let me just say
that the confusion at the first student division meeting paled in
comparison. We had so many people that folks were literally sitting on one
another. Therefore, there was tons of crowding at the sign-in booth, and
many (for some reason) didn't write in their Presidential preference in the
first tally. So then, because there were only like eight supporters of one
candidate and the rest were for another, we, as a crowd in light of our size
and our predicament, decided that we'd note that the majority of people were
supporting one candidate over the other, and that those supporting the
minority candidate would be noted on a list. Then, after all that was said
and done, there was argument about who would be able to count in the second
tally because of the sheer volume of people who didn't write their
Presidential candidate before leaving the caucus. Luckily, we were able to
recover quite a few of them including all of the supporters of the minority
candidate. Even so and with all of the craziness, we managed to get a
delegate allotment that was a sufficient estimate of everyone involved, and
our poor secretary and tally clerk did a fabulous job of dealing with all of
the paperwork that ensued. One guy was absolutely flippant because things
were so confusing. So, to get him to shut up (because he was making a mess
of himself and making everyone more agitated), I invited him to take over
for me as chair if he thought he could do a better job than I was doing with
what we had. Needless to say, he shut up quite quickly and decided to
cooperate. In all seriousness, I would have been happy to let him take over!
In the end, we got it done, took tons of notes, got our delegates, and we
finally adjourned. Hurray for stuffed caucuses, not enough sign-in sheets,
and sheets that were copied so poorly that sighted people couldn't see where
to indicate their Presidential preference. In any case, I'm serving in our
county convention as a delegate in April. Talk about a jump into politics.
Did I fail to mention that I had no idea I was going to run this thing until
like two days prior? Yikes! In any case, I can definitely say that my
experience in the NFB (both in terms of blindness and in leadership) got me
through today, so thanks everyone for your mentorship.
So, yeah, I participated all right. Would I do it again? Maybe, if they paid
me. Grin
Respectfully,
Jedi

Hi,
I attended my caucus. I was in the Cascade Precinct. There were ten of us
but a whole lot of other people! I was glad for the great turn-out!
Thanks
Lauren
