TOVI subscribers:

WSDS staff is meeting with the Infant-Toddler Early Intervention Project
staff in mid-May regarding early intervention for infants and toddlers
who are visually impaired. In order to prepare for that meeting, we
would like some information from you.

Let me give you some background information first...

RCW 28A.155.065

"By September 1, 2009, each school district shall provide or contract
for early intervention services to all eligible children with
disabilities from birth to three years of age...in partnership with
local birth-to-three lead agencies and birth-to-three providers...The
legislature finds an urgent and substantial need to enhance the
development of all infants and toddlers with disabilities in Washington
in order to minimize developmental delays and to maximize individual
potential for learning and functioning."

How the school districts will provide or contract for these services
will vary by each individual school district. Needless to say, the
services of a TVI for a child with Vision loss aged birth to three will
be needed. Many of you already provide such services. What we would
like to know is do you need additional training on working with B-3 year
olds and families and in what format. Attached you will find a
questionnaire for you to complete and return electronically. It will
only take a few minutes; we would appreciate your assistance in this
matter.

Some current B-3 resources in Vision Impairment:

1. ViSioN program training: Vision Skills in the Natural
Environment: An Intervention Guide for Use with Children Birth to Three
with Blindness or Vision Impairment; Utah Schools for the Deaf and the
Blind. There will be one-day training on July 17th in Yakima at the
Combined Summer Institute with compiler Barbara Peterson from Utah
Schools for the Deaf and Blind presenting. The training is $100, and
includes the $70 manual/guide, breakfast and lunch. Registration
information can be found at: www.ncesd.org/csi

2. An Early Intervention Guidelines for Infants and Toddlers with
Vision Impairment in Washington State, written by Diane McCutchen and
Dr. Nancy Hatfield, can be downloaded at: www.wsdsonline.org/blind
Click on downloadable documents on the left side of the site.

THANK YOU for your time!
