Last Dallas convention I met Dr. Matson when I snuck out to get a coffee.? I did not recognize him, but we sat a t the bar and talked old movies , favorite directors and?Chinese movies., Just all sort of things around films.? gradually the pieces fell into place as to who this charming intelligent college instructor was and why he was at the convention.? I felt really lucky to have had such an encounter as I got to meet Floyd.? It was a very special fifteen minute encounter.? That is one of the great things about conventions, you just don't know who you will meet or where.? His?passing is definitely a loss on many levels and for a great many people.

Let me echo Denise's comments about Dr. Matson. He was indeed a
tremendous scholar, a believer in the philosophy of the NFB, far more
than many blind individuals out there, and he was a fun person to be
around as well. He loved challenging students, and even post university
folks like me to think, and to act as well. His contributions to Doctor
tenBroek's legacy, and to the NFB are unquestionably central to the
success of them. You can bet he and Hazel, and probably Dr. tenBroek as
well would be at a banquet table right now if that is their fate. He
certainly will be missed.

For those of you who may not be acquainted with Dr. Matson, he was a co
author with Dr. ten Broek on several of his books about welfare and
rights
of blind persons to travel without liability. The interesting point is
that
Dr. Matson was an undergraduate at the time and it was very unusual to
give
co author rights to someone without an advanced degree. He was well
respected in his field of American Studies. He remained devoted to the
NFB
all of the rest of his life. He was a kind and very generous man. Soft
spoken, very insightful, and an important individual in the history of
the
National Federation of the Blind. One of his most recent books was a
biography of Dr. ten Broek which showed the impact historically and
culturally of his work as a legal scholar and educator at UC Berkeley.
He
was a good friend of Hazel ten Broek, Dr. Jernigan and those of us who
had
the pleasure of knowing him as an individual. His passing is a great
loss
and I hope those of you who did not know him will try to learn from
others
the contributions he made to our organization as an important figure in
the
history of our organization.
