For those of you who may not be acquainted with Dr. Matson, he was a co
author with Dr. ten Broek on several of his books about welfare and rights
of blind persons to travel without liability. The interesting point is that
Dr. Matson was an undergraduate at the time and it was very unusual to give
co author rights to someone without an advanced degree. He was well
respected in his field of American Studies. He remained devoted to the NFB
all of the rest of his life. He was a kind and very generous man. Soft
spoken, very insightful, and an important individual in the history of the
National Federation of the Blind. One of his most recent books was a
biography of Dr. ten Broek which showed the impact historically and
culturally of his work as a legal scholar and educator at UC Berkeley. He
was a good friend of Hazel ten Broek, Dr. Jernigan and those of us who had
the pleasure of knowing him as an individual. His passing is a great loss
and I hope those of you who did not know him will try to learn from others
the contributions he made to our organization as an important figure in the
history of our organization.
