Hi, Mike,
I can appreciate your ambivalence. However, it's a first step for people
who might otherwise not try a new recreational activity. Maybe after
achieving success in adaptive sports, someone might go on to do something in
"regular rec".

I put the below letter on the list in that it has to do with a valid
division of NFB and valid NFB activities. Personally, however, I can't
get overly-enthusiastic about events which largely have to do with
adaptive sports when the fundamental purpose of NFB is to promote the
integration of the blind into *regular* society on a basis of equality
with the sighted, i.e., integrating the blind into the *regular*
pursuits, passtimes and activities the rest of society enjoys.
Ah well.

Hello everyone, several of you have been asking what you can do to
become more involved. Well, here is your chance, The Sports and
Recreation division is planning on hosting a sports extravaganza
during
the 2008 convention. You are probably asking what is this? So, I
will
give you a brief description. It is still in the planning stage
however, We are fortunate on this list to have people with knowledge
about sports and recreation . If someone asks a question it is
answered
by individuals who are extremely helpful. It is the hope of our board
to spread this knowledge to the entire Federation during next years
convention. In the past, S and R with the assistance of several
dedicated people has put on events like two tandem bike rides, a
rowing
event and dance lessons. Now we want to take it one step further. We
want to teach people about goalball, judo, tandem bike riding track
and
field, dance, rowing ECT. This is a huge endeavor, but I honestly
believe an event like this is necessary. I also think it is something
that can be accomplished but it is going to take a lot of hard work
and
people to make it happen. This is where you come in. If you are
interested in helping in any way please let me know by emailing me off
list at: christellablue at gmail.com and I will find a way to utilize
your
talents and expertise. I want to make this event a success and I
believe
that this division has the energy, talent and drive to make this one
of
the most exciting events to be held at a NFB convention. So if you
are
interested in helping an any capacity please let me know. We are
going
to try to have some parolimpians to speak and provide guidance
however,
we also need any assistance we can get. I strongly encourage anyone
to
be a part of this extravaganza. If you don't mind working hard and
having fun please get in touch with me. Thanks in advance
Christella Garcia Vice President Sports and Recreation Division.
