Hi Lisa,
Those who are wiser and have more experience have already responded, but I just had to put in my two cents.? I have been told that my eye disease is untreatable and irreversible and will progress to either total blindness or pin points of light.? I voted for the pin points, but don't know if my vote counts here.? Things have started deteriating rapidly lately.? Sure I would like to stabilize my vision or perhaps even delay it's progress.? I don't think that makes me less of a ?person or a Federationist. It is just so damn convenient to have it, maybe it makes my lazy as I don't have? to think as far ahead or plan ahead as much or pay attention to my environment. What I hope I ?would not do is keep having surgery after surgery after surgery, up into the teens, especially if it meant I was receive donor tissue.? I hope that I would be wise enought to say give some one elsde a chance at the donor tissue? However, I am 60 and have other health issues
Thankfully they quite making 'one size fits all' panty hose, They either could be pulled up over my head, no joke, or I could not even get them over my ample bum.? It is your surgery and your life.? If you have a chance to stablize or get some vision back, do what makes you feel comfortable..? I heard about a famous research scientist who when stymied as to which avenue of research to pursue whould flip a coin to make his dissions.? If he didn't feel comfortable with the out come then he knew to follow the other path which felt more comfortable.? Good luck and keep us posted on the out come.
Sincerely,
Kay Burrows

Subject: [nfbwatlk] A question
Hello:
?
I have been asked the question concerning my consideration for surgery:
?
Is it worth the effort?
?
I know that some feel that useable vision is not important. I am wondering am I
being strange about wanting to hold on to mine. I do use the vision I have left.
I am presently learning braille and using speech almost exclusivly. On the other
hand, my vision helps me in other ways. I use it when I do math (tutoring). I
want to handle things properly; not just have the surgery to fulfill the desire
of any kind. Nor do I wish to prove anything to myself or others. I do live a
full and happy life. What vision I have left; I don't take for granted;
especially after loosing the left eye 6 years ago. I am now taking steps to
function more independently as a blind person. On the other hand, is it wrong or
strange to wish to hold onto what is left? I don't think that what I am
considering is strange or whatever? I think it is a perfectly natural reaction.
?
I want to hear your feedback about this. I think it will aid me in coping with
the situation better and also not look at the prospect of total blindness (if it
ever happens); without so much fear.
?
Thanks:
?
Lisa Owen
