Mentoring Partnership Benefits Youth Ages 6 to 21
Project MOVE and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest
have joined in partnership to serve youth in Spokane County
While Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest provides
mentoring for children age 6 to the teen years, Project MOVE is the
first mentoring program focused on youth with disabilities, ages 16-21
in Spokane County. Mentoring for this wide range of ages and population
is key to providing the continuum of support needed to enhance the lives
of youth in our community.
Big Brothers Big Sisters model is recognized for its' "best practice" in
comprehensive and successful match coordination, support and
sustainability. Project MOVE has adopted the Big Brothers Big Sisters
model adapting it to meet the needs of youth with disabilities. Funded
by the Department of Education, Rehabilitation Service Administration,
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest, along with Washington
Initiative for Supported Employment and the University of Washington
Center for Disability Policy and Research, have collaborated with
Community-Minded Enterprises to bring comprehensive mentoring services
to this population of youth in Spokane County. The goal of Project MOVE
is to facilitate positive relationships between caring adults and youth,
in order to support and encourage youth to explore their interests,
goals and assist them in moving through the sometimes challenging
transition from high school to the adult world. Individuals do not
require special training or qualifications to become a mentor with
either program. Mentors are everyday people who care about youth and
want to see them succeed in life. They are people who want to give back
to the community in a meaningful way. They are people like you!
