Noel,

In the committees you mentioned I agree probably should mee on a weekend,
since I assume those committees have members from around the State.
However, if the meeting is ouof a committee members town, it may mean
taking time off work to travel to the meeting anyway.
Some points about the meeting that started this thread. This particular
meeting of the Transportation ADA Advisory is comprised of individuals
locally. Some employers will allow time off to attend meeting for community
purposes. Since it is local an employer may allow flex time, so that, no
leave time is required to be taken. This doesn't help much if one is a
citizen, just wanting to attend the meeting. One must also ask is the
committee worthwhile enough and ones input valuable enough to use leave
time. The committee may meet twice a month for 2 or 3 months, then will meet
once a month. Also, in this particular meeting, is the first time it has
met. Therefore the time may be changed to an evening meeting or at least
starting at 5:30 PM. However, for those of us on the committee it makes our
day a lot longer. But, it is only once a month.

The issue of advisory bodies holding their meetings during week days is
significant to me. Most advisory bodies do meet on weekdays during
traditional work hours. A couple such relevant examples are the
Statewide Independent Living council and the Governor's Committee on
Employment of People with Disabilities. I believe that the Patron
Advisory Council to there WTBBL also meets on week days during work
hours, but correct me if I am wrong about that.

It seems to me that this issue often results in a reduced pool of people
who can serve on these advisory bodies and also narrows the type of
person who can serve. There are a few people who can or are willing to
use vacation time but mostly people cannot or will not. This means that
the pool of potential advisors is disproportionately populated by
unemployed people or government or nonprofit employees who are allowed
to use work time for the activity.

I have always appreciated that DSB and WSSB advisory bodies primarily
meet on Saturdays. I hope that practice continues.

Noel

Hey,

Since I'm on this list, and I have been uttering Mike's sentiments for a
while, I want to jump in and try my hand at explaining. March 27, from
3 to 5 P.M. is smack dab in the middle of some folks' work days, or even
close to the end. Attending meetings that are scheduled in the
afternoon, or morning for that matter can be a problem for those who
work.

How's that!
