I have known Mike Hingson for thirty-five years.  We were neighbors in Boston.  He is an outstanding traveler, whether using a dog or a cane.  He uses both exceptionally well.  The one thing to remember is that it was Hingson's decision to leave the building with those in his office.  He could smell the aviation fuel, and, therefore, knew that an airplane had hit the building.  It is a good thing that he made the decision that he did.  Otherwise, he would have been trapped in the building with his dog and the other people in his office.

Mike Hingson was on the seventy-somethingth floor of one of the World 
Trade Center towers when it was struck on 9/11. He and his guide dog 
made it out, obviously! He gives a gripping presentation on the incident 
and obviously GDB knows a good thing and hired him. But this doesn't 
detract from his story; if anything, he underplays both the heroism of 
the dog and his own.

He presented at a NFBW convention a few years ago also. He is a NFB 
member of long-standing.
