Why should blind people care about the Third National Conference on Media Reform, held yesterday in Memphis?
Simply this. The pressure is growing, not only to consolidate and control the mainstream news media, but the internet itself.
In its current form the internet provides us with an open format to exchange ideas and information freely. For many blind men and women this means the
ability to come out of isolation and into a community. A feeling of finally belonging. A chance to learn. A place to share ideas and test theories,
and expand individual knowledge.
For blind folks around our nation, indeed around the world, it is our Town Meeting.
But in some circles the internet is seen as a gold mine full of riches for the taking. Exploitation and ultimate commercialization of this free form of
communication will produce economic constraints which will drastically limit or exclude many of our poorer members.
