Hi Lauren,
Another interesting noise maker that alerted everyone that a car was coming 
was the practice of tying tin cans to the back of a, "just married" car.
But seriously, because of our national love affair of the automobile, blind 
people and indeed, all pedestrians will face some hard times before the 
situation resolves itself.  By resolving itself I mean that we are close to 
having the technology to produce vehicles that will automatically stop 
before the collide with another object.  Then there is my fantasy world in 
which we have vehicles propelled by a magnetic field, using no fuel, and 
equipped with auto pilots.  Just hop in, tell it where to go, and whish, 
you're there.
