Alco, your description of the starched blind spinster whose father drove her
around, could have fit several of the rehab teachers who worked for DSB over
the years.
As I said before, my experience at the Seattle training center was a downer.

But one of my high points on the road to Independence and right-thinking,
was my visit to the Iowa Commission for the Blind back in 1973. First, the

blind woman who gave us the tour of the building was so professional that I
asked her what her position with the agency was. She laughed and said, "My
position is that of a student. I'm attending the adult training center".

As we toured, I was taping interviews with students and staff for my radio
show in Spokane, on KPBX-FM. It was called, "NFB in Action".

Everyone I spoke with impressed me. But one young man, just entering
college, had such a positive, can-do attitude, that I have never forgotten
him.
"What are you planning to study in college?" I asked him.
"Nuclear physics", was his quick response.
"Do you know a blind nuclear physicist?" I asked in surprise.
"No, but if nobody did anything for the first time, we'd all still be making
brooms, wouldn't we?"
