Hogan's Corner
Nancy Wise, a sponsor agent from Idaho, alerted me to a woman
subscriber. She wrote, "We have a client in Sandpoint who is 91 years
old, and lives in an assisted living facility. She was a newspaper
reporter for many years, and wrote articles for the cruise lines in the
1930's. She met several famous people, and was well known in the
newspaper business. She has always been a very independent woman, and
is now suffering from the end stages of Macular Degeneration. As a
result, she is no longer able to use magnification for reading, and her
greatest desire was to be able to read the newspaper again. Our Rehab
Teacher told her about Newsline and she was thrilled. An application was
completed and a few weeks later the Rehab Teacher went back to see her
to show her how to use this service. She was enthusiastically thanked
and informed she had been using the service daily. Newsline had met her
needs and she was able to use this service!"
After I read Nancy's words, I called and asked if she could give me the
name of the woman and a telephone number where I could reach her. As a
result, I had a wonderful conversation with Ethel Kurland last Friday
afternoon - a truly unexpected pleasure on Friday the 13th. Ethel did
work in the news business and has traveled all over the world. She raved
about being able to read the newspapers again and certainly seems very
up-to-date on national and international news. She raved about Newsline
and said that it was a "wonderful service" and she was "delighted to be
back in touch with the world." Ethel told me that she has a book coming
out and in a few weeks will have a book signing in Idaho. The title of
her book is, "The Courage of Ignorance," which begins with her
experience at seventeen years of age in getting started in the news
business with the Cruise Lines in New York City. Ethel's message is one
of persistence - she wants young people to be persistent in finding the
kind of work they WANT to do, not settle for a job. Ethel seems to
follow her own advice. She wants to stay informed and connected with
the world and she is now able to read many newspapers per day and the
New Yorker every week - all thanks to NFB-Newsline! After I got off the
phone, I googled "Ethel Kurland" and sure enough her book was the first
item to appear with excerpts and some photos.
Thank you, Nancy Wise, for bringing such a wonderful person and story to
our attention!

Now, kudos to another one of our great Newsline supporters - Kirk
Harmon, a Florida volunteer, travels around central Florida trying to
get people to sign up for Newsline. He pays special attention to
veterans and has signed up many vets including those in VA hospitals.
Well, Kirk deserves special mention this month in particular. Did you
see the number of new subscribers in Florida? Sabrina and Kirk have
certainly been busy, as Florida has set a new state record of new
subscribers for one month - 122! Hats off to you both!

One more thing - the Ready Reference Guide will be updated with new
information around May 1st. The Ready Reference Guide is another format
containing instructions on how to use Newsline. It is printed in 14
point font and the updated version will contain information about TV
listings and information. I will send electronic copies to those who
have already requested it. Let me know if you are interested.

Remember: April showers bring May flowers!
