Hi, all.
Ben asked about voting experiences with the new accessible machines. I just
returned from the local elections office where I cast my vote using the
accessible system chosen by Clark County. It's the Hart (sp) system -- the
one with a rotating dial to make selections. The speech consists of digital
recordings of people reading the ballot. I had absolutely no difficulty
understanding the instructions and making my selections. Some might find the
speech a tad slow but I was glad to have the reading done carefully given
that it was not synthesized speech.
When the paper verification ballot was printed, the machine read all my
choices just as we of NFB had advocated. And I don't think it took much more
time than it does to cast a paper ballot using a reader.
The only disappointment was that I was the first person to use the system;
while the polls are open until eight o'clock, I'd hate to be the only person
who uses the system.
Bottom line: the system worked as it is supposed to. HB-1222 lives!
