David:

In an ideal world, I would agree with you. This is not an ideal world.
The way I see it, it is an unfortunate truth that most people don't want
to read about, hear of or watch people like themselves; they want to
observe people to whom they can feel superior or, at least, for whom
they can feel sorry. Thus, it seems to me that videotaping people being
trained to travel independently, to hold down regular jobs and the like
will produce programs that are one big yawn for the average person
wanting to escape the day's cares by watching "reality" TV and the like
-- and I use the word "reality" advisedly.

ABC doesn't give a farthing about the harm it's doing us as long as
people watch, or, rather, as long as the ratings gurus *say* they're
watching and advertisers key in on those ratings!

Am I saying we shouldn't write? By no means! WE must do what we can. Do
I have much hope of enlightening network or advertising gurus? Nope;
'fraid not. And I'd bet money that Extreme Home Make-over will be much
harder to knock off the air than was "Good and Evil".
