MORE LIGHT RAIL, BUSES, BIKE PATHS, AND SIDEWALKS - GETTING TO YES IN 2007!
We've made a lot of progress this year - Sound Transit chose light rail as its preferred technology to connect Seattle and Bellevue, the RTID must now fund transit, and I-917 (Eyman's latest) just went down due to lack of valid signatures. But there's still a lot of work to do. Vehicle emissions account for over 60% of greenhouse gases in our region - making them the region's largest contributors to global warming pollution. If we are serious about reducing global warming we must start by reforming our transportation system - and next year we'll have a chance. In 2007, we will be voting on significant transportation investments and it is critical that we tell our decision makers what we want! Tell Sound Transit and RTID you want more light rail, buses, bike paths, and sidewalks - the public outreach period ends October 27th, so the time to act is now!

BACKGROUND:
In 2007, voters in King, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties will be asked to pass a substantial Sound Transit and Regional Transportation Investment District (RTID) joint ballot measure containing billions of dollars for new capital projects and service improvements. With this vote, we can dramatically reshape the direction of transportation and make investments that could potentially improve our mobility, health, and environment.
The environmental community has advocated that our transportation decisions consider pollution, sprawl and health concerns. Those concerns have never been greater. The debate over global warming is over and the simple fact is this: We cannot make progress on global warming if we are not prepared to analyze how our transportation decisions affect it. Every day, more citizens are moving to the Puget Sound region, more greenhouse emissions are being released into our air, more people are getting asthma, and commuters are spending more time than ever behind the wheels of their cars. While these problems are not new, they are only getting worse and the time to address them is now.
Tell Sound Transit and RTID you want more light rail, buses, bike paths, and sidewalks, specifically:
1. FULLY FUND SOUND TRANSIT. It is critical that our regional light rail system is completed as soon as possible, and that we continue to invest in high-ridership regional buses, as well as commuter rail.
2. FIX IT FIRST. We need to repair our crumbling roads and bridges before we consider investing in new highway capacity projects. Several regionally significant structures are on the brink of failure and incorporating the best principles of community design in these corridors must be a priority.
3. TRANSIT TO COMPLEMENT CONSTRUCTION. By law, RTID must fund transportation choices - buses, active transportation, vanpools, etc - in every corridor affected by road construction. Those investments should augment Sound Transit's projects; we'll need them to maintain regional mobility!
4. CARBON ASSESSMENTS. This ballot measure must lead to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions - we need to ensure that carbon assessments are performed on all projects.
5. CONGESTION PRICING. We already promote peak period pricing for other finite energy sources (think of light bills during high use times) and similar principles should apply to our highway investments. Both replacement and any new highway lanes should be tolled.
We are at a critical juncture where we must create a vision and decide what kind of region we want to be. With forward-thinking transportation decisions, cooperation, leadership, and the support of citizens like you - we can make it happen!
