[nfbwatlk] A question of recruitment

I think we need to start with a student division. We have six or seven students. That is a good start. People are under the impression that we need to start with a big organization. We should start with what we have and don't become discouraged because we may only have six or seven, whether that be a student division or chapter.

We need to think about what we can do as individuals. If we pick up one or two new members, that is great. We should not think about that we should have fifty. We need reasonable goals.

I was president of the South bay Chapter in L.A. during the early 1970's. We started out with four or five people. After a year, we only had six or seven. It was discouraging, but by the second year, we had thirty to forty people. We need to recognize that people have different reasons for joining an organization. With some people, it is philosophical commitment. However, with most people, it boils down to socialization and selfishness.

People need a reason to join an organization. It does not matter whether the organization is political or social or economic. You will not like the comparison, but the concept is the same. Castro started out with nine followers. I repeat that we need a student division. Let's make it happen.

I agree. How do we proceed? What are some good strategies?
