Subject: [Wcb-l] Update for Ann McCay 10-01

Hi Everyone!!
I was gone to DC most of the week so missed out on many of this week's
events. So, here's the update according to Ann and Rick:

Ann completed the second week of treatment. It really is going very well now
that she's got the very expensive nausea meds. She's eating much more and
generally feels good though not a lot of energy. But it's much better than
the first week. We were all pretty nauseated about the idea of paying $1,500
co-pay for 60 of the nausea pills, but fortunately among the thousands of
phone numbers Ann has been calling to work through the prescriptions, we
found an option to pay $100 instead. The lesson on that one is to be
persistent. Things don't cost what they seem sometimes. Actually I've been
amazed at how little she has really paid for drugs except for this
particular one. But it has really made a difference, and although she
doesn't eat much, she does eat regular meals now. She declares that only the
vanilla and chocolate Ensure are good. That' a great invention.

We're waiting eagerly for the 142 boxes which are the result of Rick's move.
These will arrive on Wednesday PM. Yeah, did I mention there are 142 of
them? We will stack them in the basement and then organize a work party to
distribute them to worthy organizations. Oh, guess that's not what Rick
wants to do with them. But somehow we'll manage to incorporate them I'm
sure. And I know Rick will be glad to have them.

While I was gone the animals had a close encounter of the worst kind. Rick
was headed downstairs, Eddy was coming up, and Marcina was standing near the
top of the stairs. Rick scooped Eddy up so that Rick would not step on him.
Unfortunately this resulted in Eddy and Marcina suddenly being at eye level.
Eddy found this unacceptable. So, he hissed, and then he did something else
that rimes with hiss. Unfortunately he didn't do something else that rimes
with hiss--he didn't miss. He got Rick thoroughly and the floor. Oh well!!
Relations have been set back several years now I'm sure. Marcina had no
reaction, and Eddy has recovered fully. But we're no closer to
reconciliation.

Did I mention that the 142 boxes will arrive on Wednesday PM?

Since I was gone all week, people from church brought dinner each day for
Ann and Rick. Rick has never eaten so many vegetables in his life. On my
trip I couldn't have found a veggie if my life had depended on it and was
consigned to bad burgers. They appreciated the food, I was glad to not have
that worry, and all went well.

Ann has received lots of cards and gifts along the way. One of the nicest
gifts came this week--a wonderful fruit basket. She has chowed on that very
willingly. The company delivering it had our phone number but not the
address. They left a message on our voice mail but no area code. So it took
a bit of research to locate them and get the basket, but Ann was very
pleased with figuring this out. And the fruit has been really wonderful.

Oh, and did I mention that the 142 boxes will be coming on Wednesday PM? I
almost forgot!! We'll be recruiting help to get them actually unpacked.

A lot of people have inquired about Ann's work status. The nature of her job
is that there really is not light duty that she could perform while she's
having treatment. Perhaps when she can return (hopefully in May) this will
come into play, but right now she's off work entirely. We are still waiting
for the Long-term Disability to start. When it does, she will receive part
of her salary until she returns to work. We are using the donated leave
until then, and will continue to use a small amount of donated leave to keep
her medical benefits going. You have to work enough hours to cover the
employee contribution to benefits. So, it is anticipated that she will be
completely off work until about the first of May, and then probably
returning on a gradual basis. All subject to change of course, but right now
we're on target for the treatment except that we're one radiation treatment
off schedule because of equipment problems. She'll be making that treatment
up at the end--like a snow day from school.

And finally, the 142 boxes will be here on Wednesday. Yikes!! I have cleared
a full wall from floor to ceiling and hope it's enough. I also hope that
Eddy or Marcina don't get behind any of the piles. Of course we'll lock them
both up, in separate places, during the delivery. And it's scheduled for
after Ann returns from radiation so that she can be napping during the
exciting event. Maybe I could leave for DC on Wednesday.

Ann also asked me to mention the Northwest Church Christmas play. She's
planning to be in the choir again this year. She couldn't make the practice
today, but will make all she can. More details as we go along, but for those
of you who are in the Puget Sound area, the play will be December 7, 8, and
9. What she wants most is for you to come. And we need to pray that her
stamina holds up for the practices. More details as we get closer.

As always, thanks to all of you for your prayers, emails, calls, service,
and everything else you do. It's all appreciated though I know I haven't had
time to thank each of you personally. One day I'll have more time for letter
writing. But meanwhile, please know that everything is very, very
appreciated. And Ann particularly appreciates the emails:

Be back next weekend with more news!! 142 boxes? What am I in for.
