Speaking from a Math tutoring point of view, I am very concerned that 50% of
high school students are failing the test, it makes me wonder if the entire
test should be scrapped.
When WA ranks near the bottom of the list for education and funding for
education, this kind of result should be a strong wake up call for our state and
local governments. Just in the past year, the math center at Whatcom Community
College has seen a marked increase in the number of students needed
assistance with high school level math. Unfortunately, programs such as ours often do
not receive the funding needed to fill the demand.
All students must be a priority when it comes to education. Having
standarized testing with a requirement of passing in order to graduate from high
school will not fix the problem of poor teaching , under funding, or over
medicating students. I never thought that I would see the day when teachers and
public officials, passing the buck and not taking direct responsibility for
education. Our young people are being cheated when are forced to take such
standardized tests and they are placed under enormous stress and pressure to pass.
They spend more time preparing for testing rather than study and learning.
This has to stop.
I am often asked by my students, why didn't my teacher teach this to me when
I was in school? I ask myself the same thing.
Let's fix what is broken and take the pressure off the students and help
them learn and enjoy education.
