For the most part you are right, Marty.
The average black bear, in the average woods, doing the average bear thing,
tends to avoid a fight. But, as with us human type animals, from time to
time you can run across a cranky bear.
Just imagine walking down a very dark street on Capitol Hill, in Seattle.
Suddenly a very large fellow, around 450 pounds, dressed in a big furry
black coat, and with breath that burns the enamel off your teeth, steps out
in front of you. Now you attempt to show no fear. "Hi big fellow. How's
stuff?"
He begins to huff, puff, snort and make hacking sounds in the back of his
throat splattering your face with spittle.
Country boy or City boy, you're a darn fool if you don't turn tail and get
the heck out of there.
