Greetings!

List gremlins have been working their wicked will with avengance over
the past few days. Translation: there may be server problems either with
the ISP NFB-Net uses or with the NFB-Net server itself. The NFBWATLK
list seems to have reverted to a version created during the Devonian
Period. I've made changes as best I could to bring it up to what should
be the current list.

All of which is to say that some of you may not have gotten my
presidential update of a few days ago. So I'm sending it again with a
couple minor word changes.

Mike Freeman, President
NFB of Washington

Fellow Washingtonians:

Like the Staind song says, "It's Been A While." Enough things have
happened that a short update seems worthwhile.

NFB National Convention News

One can hardly read NFB lists without realizing that the 2006 national
convention of the National Federation of the Blind will take place in
less than a month in Dallas, Texas (it runs from July 1 through July 7).
I hope all of you have your reservations in at the Hillton anatole Hotel
as the June 1 deadline to guarantee a room has passed. If, however, you
get a sudden itch to go to the convention, it never hurts to try to make
a reservation. Call (214) 761-7500 to make it.

Maurice Mines tells me that he has learned that Internet junkies who
require high-speed connections will be charged on the order of $10.77
per day for high-speed connections in the rooms and wi-fi access in the
lobby is charged at something like $12.75 per day. This may seem
exorbitant (certainly the wi-fi does to me) but I was charged almost
this much in Atlanta in 2004.

I also understand that even local telephone calls, i.e., to Dallas
numbers, will cost $0.55 per call. So use your cellphone for all calls
except to people inside the hotel.

This year, we have a scholarship winner from Washington State. And
Lindsay Yazzolino (she of Rocket On fame) will be with us.

Each year, the NFB of Washington holds a Caucus during the convention.
It has traditionally been held on the morning of the open NFB Board of
Directors meeting; this year is no exception. The NFB of Washington
Caucus will occur from eight o'clock in the morning until 8:45 a.m. on
July 3 in the Lalique (pronounced La Leek)Room on the atrium mezanine
level. The Caucus is a time for newbies to get their questions answered,
for people to give their banquet tickets to a designated person (it's
usually been Denise Mackenstadt) for exchange so that all of us can sit
together and for people generally to get acquainted and for those
formerly of this state to say hello. All attending the convention from
Washington should attend.

2007 NFB of Washington Conventions

We've arranged for the 2007 spring and fall conventions of the NFB of
Washington. We're going back to the Ramada Inn Governor House in
Olympia. The spring convention will be the third weekend in April, 2007
and the fall convention will take place the third weekend in October,
2007. Room rates, if I remember correctly, are again a phenomenal $68
per night plus tax. The restaurant seems to specialize in Southern
cooking but there should be a sufficient variety for all tastes. In any
event, there's the tacoria caddy-corner from the hotel. (grin)

That's it for now. see yall in Dallas!

Mike Freeman, President
NFB of Washington
