Bi- lingual CLEAR (Coordinated Legal Education, Advice and Referral)
Attorney or Paralegal

The Northwest Justice Project seeks a Spanish-speaking attorney or
paralegal to work on CLEAR to provide legal advice, brief service and
referral on civil
legal problems primarily to people who have experienced family violence.
Under the supervision of the Director of CLEAR, attorneys and paralegals
serve
as part of a statewide team of legal services advocates who work
cooperatively with other providers to provide high quality legal
assistance to the State's
indigent population.

All attorneys and paralegals will be expected to bring to their work the
maturity and commitment necessary to participate as members of a
comprehensive,
statewide equal justice delivery system.

DUTIES:

1. Conduct client interviews on the telephone in scheduled duty shifts
either by answering calls directly or by returning calls;
2. Conduct intake interview, confirm eligibility, analyze the caller's
problem and determine the appropriate level of service;
3. In appropriate cases, provide brief service, which may range from
verbal or written advice, to negotiating a resolution on the client's
behalf;
4. Use a computerized system for contemporaneous recording of client
information and case notes, conflict checking, case management, and
determining appropriate
referrals;
5. Maintain familiarity with areas of law handled in the intake system
and keep abreast of changes in all areas of relevant law;
6. Engage with partners in the legal services delivery system through
activities such as becoming familiar with key service providers in an
assigned geographic
portion of the state, participating on a substantive law task force or
Access to Justice-related committee;
7. Develop self-help and legal education materials for the client
community regarding legal rights and responsibilities as well as
instructions for pro-se
representation in appropriate matters;
8. Work cooperatively with other members of CLEAR to test, evaluate and
improve the system so that it works optimally within the greater civil
legal services
delivery system and to identify trends in legal issues of the low-income
community;
9. Some attorneys may review and supervise the work of other staff;
10. Keep the Director of CLEAR and/or Director of Advocacy apprised of
any matters relating to program integrity and the equal justice needs of
the geographic
area served including program priorities and delivery system concerns.

SPECIFICATIONS:
List of 6 items
1. Prior experience in the practice of poverty law or equivalent
experience;
2. Attorneys must be members of the Washington State Bar Association or
admitted within a reasonable length of time after employment;
3. Spanish fluency is required;
4. Willingness to travel occasionally;
5. Technologically independent: possess dependable computer skills in
word processing and the ability and interest to learn new software
applications necessary
for the efficient administration of the project;
6. Willingness to periodically work early evening a plus.
