Carl:
You have a right to your opinion just as we have a right to ours. However,
you are mistaken in your characterization of NFB's position and its motives.
We are not knuckling under to "propaganda" against the oppressed minority,
the blind; in our view, we are protesting a misguided effort to ameliorate
conditions for that minority -- an effort which is taking place in the wrong
venue at the wrong time and which, in our view, is likely to cause far more
harm than good to that oppressed minority, especially when the condition
that effort seeks to ameliorate isn't nearly the problem its accompanying
propaganda makes it out to be.
As I've said elsewhere, if you see everything in terms of access and civil
rights, then there is no room for discussion. If, however, you see the issue
as more nuanced as we do, then there is room to debate methods, timing and
necessity.
Mike

Once again Lisa, I respect your position. We disagree. No doubt about it.
Oppressed people, and I submit that we blind folks are oppressed, rarely
have the luxury of picking the "right" time to stand up against their
oppressors.
We will always be threatened and told that what we demand is too costly to
society. However, this is also an effective technique for keeping oppressed
people "in their place".
My grandmother Jarvis, daughter of a slave owner, loved to say, "I have
nothing against colored people, as long as they stay in their place".
In her mind any move toward integration would be too disruptive and costly
to the public at large. Any black man or woman who demanded equal treatment
under the law were malcontents and trouble makers.
And so it is with us blind folk. We totally look away from the oppressive
cost to our people, the cost of second class citizenship, and eagerly agree
with
the propaganda that it is we who will create an unbearable cost.
Our difference is that you buy it and I don't.
Respectfully,
Carl Jarvis
