I do think that the M's ought to break the mold and go for broke on Zito.
After all, although management wisely worries about the bottom line, ending
up dead last or nearly so isn't terribly profitable, either.

If the Mariners do sign Zito, it wouldn't be the first time they've tried.
The M's drafted him out of high school in the 1996 draft, but he did not
sign, perhaps because he was selected in the fifty-ninth round. The A's
drafted him three years later as the ninth overall pick in the 1999 draft.
Just one of those useless factoids running around in my brain. <G>
