[nfbpnotk] regulating dampers

Hi Shawn,

I am retired now but I did a lot of damper replacing in my day and it
can be done by a blind person alright although a final check from a
sighted person doesn't hurt. I presume you have established the
height of the lever and have some kind of adjustable tool to make
them all even with the sample. The single and double strings are
very easy to get straight as they just fall into place. the treble
ones with a trichord damper needs a little more attention. Adjust it
so it looks good with it's neighbor and then raise it and drop it and
see if the trichord wedges fall between the strings like they should.
If not, take a pair of plyers and grip the wire far enough below the
guide rail so if you score the wire it won't get into the guide rail
bushing and erode it. Twist the wire slightly to the rightand left
until the trichord falls freely into the trichord strings. You can
check with your fingers to see if the block damper seems to be even
on the three strings. It's not one of the easier jobs but can be
done. Also keep checking to see that the space between the damper
heads is paralell. .I hope that's understandable, I'm not too good
with explaining things without the person being with me. I used to
teach piano technology for the state of California for a number of
years but that was back 20 or 30 years now and details kind of escape
me. Hope that helps

Bud
