Bucket List

Two elderly men, blue-collar automotive mechanic Carter Chambers and
billionaire Edward Cole, meet for the first time in a hospital owned by
Edward after both men are diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

Carter, a gifted amateur historian and family man, wanted to become a
history professor in his youth but chose to start a family instead. Edward,
a four-time divorced healthcare tycoon and cultured loner, enjoys drinking
kopi luwak, one of the most expensive coffees in the world and mocking his
personal valet Matthew, whom he wrongly but intentionally calls Thomas.

While in the hospital, Carter and Edward manage to find common ground. For
fun, Carter started writing a list of activities to do before he "kicks the
bucket." After hearing he has less than a year to live, he dejectedly
discards his list.

Edward finds the list the next morning and urges Carter to do everything on
it, adds his own items and offers to finance all expenses. He agrees,
although his wife Virginia objects, so the two patients begin their
globetrotting last vacation along with Matthew. They go skydiving, drive a
vintage Shelby Mustang and Dodge Challenger around California Speedway, fly
over the North Pole, eat dinner at Chèvre d'or, visit the Taj Mahal, ride
motorcycles on the Great Wall of China, attend a lion safari in Tanzania and
visit Mount Everest.

Atop the Great Pyramid of Giza, they confide mutually about faith and
family. Carter reveals that he has long been feeling less in love with his
wife and feels some regret for his chosen path. Edward discloses that he is
deeply hurt by his estrangement from his only daughter, who distanced
herself after he drove away her abusive husband. Later, while in Hong Kong,
Edward hires a prostitute to approach Carter, as he has never been with any
woman but his wife. Carter declines and insists they stop the bucket list
and go home.

During the return journey, Carter tries to reunite Edward with his estranged
daughter. Considering this a breach of trust, Edward scolds him and then
angrily storms off. Carter returns home to his family while Edward, feeling
alone, breaks down weeping in his luxury home. Carter's family reunion turns
out to be short-lived as, while readying for marital romance, he collapses
and is rushed to the hospital. There, it is discovered that the cancer has
spread to his brain. Edward, now in a remarkable remission, visits him to
reconcile.

Carter, always a Jeopardy! fan and knowledgeable trivia fanatic, reveals how
Edward's kopi luwak coffee is fed to and defecated by a jungle cat before
being harvested. As the two laugh hysterically over the obscure fact,
crossing off the item 'laugh to tears', Carter implores Edward to finish the
list for him.

After Carter dies during surgery, Edward manages to reconcile with his own
daughter, who introduces him to the granddaughter he never knew he had.
After greeting the little girl by kissing her cheek, he thoughtfully crosses
"kiss the most beautiful girl in the world" off the bucket list. Soon after,
Edward delivers a eulogy at Carter's funeral, during which he explains that
the last three months of Carter's life were, thanks to Carter, the best
three months of his own.

An epilogue reveals that Edward lived to age 81 and Matthew then took his
ashes to a peak in the Himalayas. As he places a Chock full o'Nuts coffee
can of Edward's ashes alongside another can of Carter's ashes, he crosses
off the last item on the bucket list, "witness something truly majestic",
and tucks the completed list between the cans. A voice-over from Carter says
that he thought Edward would have gotten a laugh out of being buried on the
mountain as it is apparently against the law.

Castaway

In December 1995, a FedEx courier collects a package from a woman sculptor,
whose gate carries the names "Dick & Bettina". The package, marked with a
pair of golden angel wings, is delivered to her husband, who is in Moscow
with another woman.

Meanwhile, Chuck Noland is a FedEx systems analyst who travels the world
resolving productivity problems. He lives with his girlfriend Kelly Frears
in Memphis, Tennessee. They talk of getting married, but keep experiencing
setbacks because Chuck is constantly called away to work, straining their
relationship. During a Christmas dinner, Chuck experiences recurring
toothache, just before he is summoned to resolve a FedEx problem in
Malaysia. Before leaving, Kelly gives Chuck her grandfather's pocket watch
with a photo of her in it. He gives her a small box, saying she can wait to
open it on New Year's Eve when he returns, implying it is an engagement
ring.

The FedEx cargo plane Chuck boards is off-course, out of radio contact, and
crashes into the Pacific Ocean during a violent storm, leaving him as the
only survivor. Washing ashore on a deserted island, Chuck discovers several
FedEx packages washing up on the coast, as well as the body of one of the
pilots, Albert Miller, which he buries. In the following days, Chuck
struggles to locate food and water. After seeing a ship on the horizon, he
unsuccessfully tries to escape the island on a life raft, but is prevented
by the tide and injures his leg. Realizing it is unlikely he will be
rescued, Chuck opens most of the packages, finding items he uses to improve
his living conditions. However, he does not open a package with golden wings
painted on it, thinking the wings have symbolic meaning. While attempting to
start a fire, Chuck cuts his hand and furiously throws several objects
including a Wilson volleyball, leaving a bloody hand print. He draws a face
into the blood, names the ball Wilson and begins talking to it. Chuck
realizes the chances of his rescue are low because of the wide search area,
and later contemplates suicide. Due to severe toothache, he successfully
performs his own extraction using a rock and an ice-skate, but passes out
from the pain.

Four years later, Chuck, now bearded and disheveled, has adapted to life
alone on the island. After a section of a portable toilet enclosure washes
up, he begins constructing a raft, which he successfully launches past the
surf with Wilson, the unopened FedEx package and his belongings in tow.
Chuck survives a storm, but afterward, Wilson falls off the raft and floats
away. He unsuccessfully attempts to rescue Wilson and is left to grieve his
loss. Soon after, he is rescued by a passing cargo ship.

After four weeks, Chuck returns to the mainland, where he learns he was
presumed dead by his family and friends. As he is given a hero's welcome at
the FedEx headquarters in Memphis, he is met by his dentist Jerry Lovett,
who has married and had a daughter with Kelly, who is emotionally unable to
greet Chuck. Later that night, he visits Kelly. Chuck returns the pocket
watch and she returns his Jeep Cherokee, which she had kept after his
disappearance. They share a passionate kiss and confess their love for each
other, but realize she cannot leave her family and agree to part. Chuck
tells his friend Stan he will miss Kelly, but his experience has taught him
he must move on.

Chuck drives to Texas to return the angel-winged package to the address of
the sender; the sculptor's home, where the gate now reads only "Bettina". A
sculpture of golden wings stands in the yard. Finding no one home, he leaves
it at the door with a note saying the package saved his life. He drives away
and stops at a crossroads. The sculptor, in a pickup truck, headed in the
direction of the house, stops and tells him where each road leads. As she
leaves, Chuck notices the same angel wings painted on the tailgate of her
truck. He looks down each road, choosing which way to go, and smiles when he
faces the road taken by the truck.
