Research Participation Request: Attitudes Toward Vision Restoration:
A Survey of Preferences for Invasive and Noninvasive Mobility Aids
The below research participant solicitation is being provided for
informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has
no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may
contribute to our research mission.
Research Title: Attitudes Toward Vision Restoration: A Survey of
Preferences for Invasive and Noninvasive Mobility Aids
Being conducted by: University of California, Santa Barbara
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of my study is to explore how blind and visually impaired
adults feel about vision restoration technologies, such as retinal
implants and noninvasive wearable tools. I hope to learn how personal
factors like mobility independence, visual memory, and living
environment influence their attitudes and willingness to adopt these
devices. This research aims to amplify the perspectives of blind
individuals in the development and evaluation of assistive technologies.
Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study
Participants will complete a one-time, anonymous online survey that
takes approximately 15 - 30 minutes. The survey includes questions
about their experiences with mobility, visual memory, and opinions on
different vision restoration technologies. Participants can also
choose to volunteer for an optional follow-up interview.
Proposed Participant Compensation
Yes, Participation in the initial survey is voluntary and not
compensated. Participants who opt into a 30 - 45 minute follow-up
interview will receive a $40 physical Amazon gift card by mail. If a
participant withdraws early, they will receive pro-rated
compensation: $20 for 15 - 25 minutes, or a $10 minimum for under 15
minutes. No academic credit is offered. Mailing addresses are
collected separately, stored securely, and deleted after the study to
protect confidentiality.
