This workshop is part of the Dimensions Project at New York Public Library,
a physical and virtual lab for DIY creation and exploration of tactile
graphics and models. Learn more about us: Dimensions: Community Tools for

You may have heard of Scalable Vector Graphics, a popular image format used
by developers to create graphics that work well on almost any browser or
screen. But did you know that blind and sighted people can create these
graphics from scratch by coding in a simple text editor? With SVG you can:

· Create and combine lines, shapes, colors and patterns to build
any image you want

· Include text in any font, including Braille fonts

· Enjoy precise control over your drawings with no need for a
graphical design program

· Learn a coding practice with tangible results: send your drawings
to a Braille embosser

Before you join our Zoom, you may want to browse this study guide, where
you’ll find explanations and code examples relevant to nonvisual learners
and tactile designers: SVG Study Guide (google.com)

What We’ll Cover

· Setting up an SVG file: choosing your text editor, opening and
closing tags

· Understanding syntax

· Understanding the coordinate system

· Creating shapes: position, size, line width and infill

· Overlapping shapes: understanding layer order

· Your first project: brainstorming ideas

· Reviewing your drawing: embossers, swellform and more

· Joining the BlindSVG discussion list
