[Nfbnet-members-list] Blind and low-vision adults needed for research study on the intersection between screen readers and voice assistants

The below research participant solicitation is being provided for informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.

Screen readers and voice assistants. They're completely different, but they can potentially complement each other. I'm Mahika, a PhD student from Cornell, and I'm exploring ways in which screen readers can benefit from artificial intelligence (AI) technology, particularly in the form of a conversation.

Imagine reading text messages on your phone with VoiceOver. A friend sends you a photo. What if you can then ask VoiceOver, "What's in the photo?" VoiceOver would respond: "A woman holding a basket." Then you could ask, "What's in the basket?" and VoiceOver responds: "Oranges and Bananas." In another scenario, imagine you ask the screen reader to recall a recent web page you visited. This may seem strange today, but technology is evolving and this will be possible in the coming years.

I would love to set up a 1 hour chat to hear your thoughts and wisdom regarding screen readers, voice assistants, and everything in between. The study will be conducted over Zoom, and will mainly consist of discussions and a few scenario walk-throughs. You will be compensated with a $25 Amazon Gift Card for your time and thoughts. To participate, you must be:

  *   Over 18 years of age
  *   Identify as blind or low vision
  *   Be a regular user of screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, etc.)
  *   Be a frequent user of voice assistants (Siri, Google Home, Alexa, etc.)
