Anyone is welcome to our tech and culture programs, an evolution of
programs held at our physical branch. To suggest a workshop, volunteer your
time or inquire about our tech team, email chanceyfleet at nypl.org.

Join us for an afternoon of discovery and community
networking that can help your fitness and wellness goals become
achievements. As the pandemic and life in quarantine has changed how we
exercise, we'll explore at-home, virtual workout options that are fully
accessible to blind and disabled people. We'll also cover accessible
health trackers and apps, healthy meal-kit
delivery, accessible cookbooks for healthy living, and the wide world of
accessible sports.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to share their own
recommendations of accessible exercise equipment, fitness apps and other
wellness tools, so come prepared to share!
Special guest speakers from the world of accessible fitness will include:

Mauricio Blandino: Achilles International
Mauricio was caring for his elderly mother a few years ago and took a
terrible spill that sent him into a coma. He awoke with a Traumatic
Brain Injury and had to re-learn many day-to-day functions. He found
his way to Achilles and has discovered that running is a wonderful
outlet that has helped him to mainstream back into society and given
him a completely new platform and focus in life. He has a tremendous
wit and is an absolute joy to be around. When he is not running he's
often spending his time advocating for those who have experienced Traumatic
Brain Injuries and was honored by the Brain Injury
Association of New York with the prestigious Leadership award in 2019. As a
runner, he qualified for the Boston Marathon and ran the race in 2018
under horrific conditions. At the 2018 NYC Marathon he set out to run
a 3:45 (as a 60+ year old) and he hit the nail on the head!! Mauricio
was awarded as the 2018 NYRR Achilles Male Runner of the Year at the
recent Club Awards Night. He is a co-captain of the NYRR Achilles
International running team.

Griffin Pinkow: Foreseeable Future Foundation
The Foreseeable Future Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose
mission is to empower the blind and visually impaired through sports and
recreation.
Foreseeable Future Foundation Founder Griffin Pinkow has run four
marathons: New York City, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. He also
competes on the cycling circuit at a national level, despite only
picking up the sport two years ago. He’s competed in World Ultra Timed
Trial Championships in San Diego, riding over 150 miles in 12 hours.

Abbey Shaw: Guiding Eyes for the Blind Running Guides program
As a long-distance runner, Shaw is a member and co-captain of the New
York City chapter of Achilles International, an organization promoting
mainstream athletics for people with disabilities. She has competed in
several national half and whole marathons and triathlons. Since June
of 2019, she has been on the Advisory Committee on Transit
Accessibility for New York City Transit and currently acts as the
co-chair. Whether by plane, train or automobile, Shaw’s preferred
method of transportation is with her yellow lab guide dog from Guiding
Eyes for the Blind by her side.

Leslie Spoone
Leslie Spoone lives in Orlando, Florida with her husband Dan. Leslie
has been a certified Aerobics Instructor and a certified Personal Trainer
for over 25 years and is certified through AFAA. Leslie owned her own
Ladies gym in Florida for five years.
