The below research participant solicitation is being provided for informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.

My name is Mercedes Zapata and I am a doctoral student in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. I have RP and am a member of the California Association of Blind Students. I would like to invite you to participate in a survey for my dissertation.

This study explores the meaning of blindness and visual impairment to our sense of self. The goal of this study is to expand and refine psychological understanding of disability identity in adults with blindness or visual impairment. Disability identity has been defined as the feelings people have about their disability as well as the meaning people attribute to having disability- in our case, blindness and visual impairment.

All NFB members (18 and over) are invited to participate. The survey will take between about 10 and 20 minutes. Participants will answer questions regarding demographics and attitudes towards having VI/blindness.

Best wishes,
Mercedes
