Tactile Graphics in Education and Careers Symposium


At the


National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute


October 11-12, 2018


The National Federation of the Blind Jernigan 
Institute will host a symposium on the use of 
tactile graphics to educate blind and low vision 
students on October 11-12, 2018, at the Jernigan Institute in Baltimore.

We are currently seeking proposals for general 
session and breakout session presentations. 
Presentations are to be approximately forty-five 
minutes in duration. Approximately fifteen 
minutes will be allotted for questions from the 
audience. All proposals based on a topic that 
focuses on tactile graphics in education will be 
considered, but priority will be given to 
proposals with a topic in the following broad areas:
·       Access to and Use of tactile graphics in 
K-12, including for students who are home schooled
·       Access to and Use of tactile graphics in Higher Education
·       Tactile graphic resources for self-directed learning
·       Tactile graphic repositories
·       Innovations in production methods, equipment, and materials
·       Tactile Literacy
·       Design Considerations and Principles­what is good design?
·       Educating and upskilling in the workplace
·       Use of tactile graphics in museums and libraries for education
·       The intersection of tactile art and 
tactile graphics in education (tactile, 
representations of art, tools that facilitate 
tactile drawing, instructional techniques that 
support the development of drawing and drafting skills, etc.)

Proposals that illustrate creativity and 
innovation in advancing the state of the art in 
tactile graphics are strongly encouraged. 
Individuals and organizations interested in 
submitting a proposal for a general session or 
breakout session presentation on a topic within 
the above broad topic areas should complete the 
attached proposal form and email it to

proposals must be submitted no later than 5:00 
p.m. Eastern on May 7, 2018. Speakers whose 
proposals are accepted are encouraged to submit 
manuscripts based on their presentation to the 
<http://www.nfb-jbir.org/index.php/JBIR>Journal 
of Blindness Innovation and Research for 
consideration of publication in a special edition 
dedicated to the Tactile Graphics in Education and Careers Symposium.

All proposals must include the following 
information (please use the proposal form):
1. Title
2. Author
3. Organization/affiliation
4. Contact information including postal address, 
email address, and phone number
5. List of all speakers if a panel is proposed
6. Speaker bios
7. An abstract describing the presentation. The 
text of the abstract should not exceed five hundred words.
8. If a presentation is a hands-on presentation, 
include a description of the materials and equipment that will be used.
9. If a presentation will include tactile 
handouts, these should be noted and a sample should be submitted if possible.
