National Federation of the Blind Employment Committee

Dear Convention Attendees,
This is the agenda for the NFB Job Seeker 
Seminar, which will be held in on Monday, July 1 
in room W203A, Convention Center, level 2.  The 
convention center is directly accessible from the 
hotel.  This will give each person the basics 
needed to get a good job.  There will also be a 
special presentation by Monster.com, which has 
worked with the NFB to make all of its systems 
completely accessible to blind people.  The 
seminar will be followed by a Job Fair, with 14 
employers in attendance, all of whom are 
interested in hiring blind people.  See you there!

8:30 to 8:45: Overview, introductions, expectations

8:45 to 9:10 - Are You Ready?
             a. Blindness skills in place
             b. Know what you want to do
             c. Economic factors
             d. Transportation worked out

9:10 to 9:55 - Tools in Place?
             a. Resume [discussion], paper and electronic formats
             b. Sample cover letter
             c. Elevator speech
             d. Reasonable accommodations [discussion]
             e. References and reference letters
             f. Portfolio of work samples

9:55 to 10:25 - How to Apply
             a. Employer research
             b. Cold calling and script
             c. Networking and elevator speech
             d. Via U.S. Mail
             e. Electronic job search methods and tools

10:25 to 11:20 - Interviewing breakout sessions 
(note: we will break up into individual groups, 
and each group facilitator will handle the following subjects.)
             a. Common interview questions
             b. Talking about blindness and reasonable accommodations
             c. Key questions: Why should an 
employer hire you, or any blind 
person?  Why           would you be better than a sighted person?
             d. Clothes, grooming, and body language
             e. Asking for the job
             f. Thank you letter and follow-up contacts
             g. Recordkeeping

11:20 to 12:20 – Monster.com – a fully accessible 
job seeking resource for blind people, Ilya 
Shubik, Director Information Systems, Monster Worldwide.

12:20 to 12:30 – Questions, wrap-up, and announcements

Note: NFB Job Fair begins at 2 p.m. in adjoining room.
