Welcome to the first ever e-mail meeting of the Kentucky association of
blind students. The board has prepared the following agenda, which I have
copied into the body of this e-mail, and have also attached a Word file of
the same.
We will be leaving this meeting open for the next week, and expect to wrap
it up next Friday, April 6.
This is how you participate. As you will note all the sections have been
delineated by a letter and then a number. This is to make responding
easier, and to make the final results easier to post. You do not have to
limit yourself to initial responses but feel free to respond as long as the
meting is left open, At the end of this week the results will be compiled
and minutes of the meeting released to the list.
We are excited for everyone's participation. If you have any questions feel
free to ask.
Meeting called to order, Thursday, March 29.
A. Computer Chats
1. The Kentucky Association of Blind Students will set up a regular chat to
be held in the fourth week of every month. We will release the date of the
chat the week previous to the week in which the chat will be held. This is
so as to make sure Phil is available to set up the main computer and monitor
the flow of traffic.
2.Board member suggests that MSN Messenger might also be another chat option
if this is accessible to everyone. (Just another option for a backup.) Im
not sure if all screen reading programs work well with this program.
B. Fund raising
1. We should explore the possibility of writing letters for corporate
sponsorship. We could request funds for specific things, such as sending
members to National Convention, and acquiring a national representative to
come to our state convention. For this we will need ideas of sponsors.
People willing to write letters should not hesitate to volunteer.
Scott says that we should be sure and take a look at www.efundraising.com.
C. Out Reach
1. We should perhaps consider another event at KSB before the year is up.
We could also consider holding an event during this summers camps at KSB.
Katie said that many of the graduates will be moving to Louisville and we
would love to keep in touch with these students.
2. It was suggested that we organize an email send where we contact
different colleges in the state and ask them to share information about KABS
with any students who might be interested in joining.
3.Another suggestion is that we could also send emails to high school
counselors across the state, if we were able to find contact info.
4. Here is another idea submitted by faith who suggests that we could,
organize an awareness event in a county that is secluded from larger towns.
(For example, Jennifers county or my county.) I do know that
transportation would probably be an issue, but it is something to consider.
Maybe we could organize a Braille event at a public library, similar to the
one done at the Jefferson County Library.
5. Many on the board would like to see us get together at a time separate
from convention. It was suggested that we hold some kind of summer event.
D. Braille is Beautiful
1. Send us the names of your two classes or schools you plan to visit, and
we will try to help. Feel free to form teams if necessary
2. We would like to report that Vivian and Jayne have already visited a
kindergarten class at Rutherford.
Faith reports: I have done an activity similar to this at all four of the
elementary schools in my county. During the fall at each one of the schools
they have a Unite to Read Night to promote reading to the younger
children. I usually set up a booth at these schools, Braille childrens
names, read part of a book to them, and provide them with information. (I
usually share information on Braille, technology, NFB, and any other items
that students/ parents are interested in.) At this point I have visited
four schools and I will let you know if I visit any others.
E. T-shirts have begun to be distributed. If you still need one let a board
member know. They are five dollars. Wear them and spread the word.
F. If you still have chocolate money, or received a t-shirt but have not
paid please let Ashley know.
Ashley could you write an e-mail to the list with your contact info.
