From Michael Hingson:
FIRST EVER NFB ROWING COMPETITION
By Aerial Gilbert Outreach Manager Guide Dogs for the Blind, and
Lisamaria Martinez President NFB Sports and Recreation Division
Everyone can do it! Young, old, big or small rowing is a fantastic
way to get exercise. Come to the first ever rowing competition
sponsored by the NFB Sports
and Recreation Division, Guide Dogs for the Blind, and the National
Organization of Parents of Blind Children (NOBPC). Learn the basics
of rowing and
then
compete in an indoor rowing competition with your peers. Prizes will
be awarded for age groups and gender. The event will begin at 2:00
PM on Wednesday,
July 4, in Rooms M303 - M304, Marquis Level at the NFB national
convention in Atlanta Georgia.
You can also come and just check it out, you don't have to
compete. This is a great sport that you can do at your local gym,
compete on rowing machines
internationally or take it to the water and learn to row on a
team. Rowing is unique, you can compete on an equal playing field
with the sighted, actually
it is one sport where sight can be a disadvantage and
distracting. so come try it out, and row, row, row for fun!
Rowing is on its way to being accessible for the blind of all ages
and fitness levels. The Concept 2 rowing machine is a unique machine
that requires no
buttons to push or flat screens to mark. The Company is developing
software that eventually will be downloadable on to a Braille Note or
other pocket PC
device with speech software which will provide feedback on elapsed
time, stroke rate, and power produced while rowing. This "Erg Chatter
software" will
be available
to demo at the event.
