[Nfbkabs] Meeting: A. Computer Chats

In the past, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, and most of the other "free" chat rooms
have set limits to the number of people it would allow before it is no
longer "free" (usually around 5). Be sure to check it out before making a
decision.

That was only one run, and since many of us are set up with the Teamspeek
thing is it worth another shot. I am the most technically inept person in
the group.

Just my personal opinion, but I remember it taking us several hours to get
people signed in and set up properly with the software we used before. With
AIM, your main screen has your password and screename right there. Then you
can either go directly to the room or have someone invite you if you need
it. Also, you can setup an icon to sit on your desktop (or wherever you
want) that will allow you to go directly to the room each time. If memory
serves me correctly, it was pretty accessible with JAWS.

AOL is usually pretty easy to use from a technological point of view. It is
usually a good place for people new to computers and the internet to start.
I know they have had their accessibility issues in the past but AIM usually
falls outside these. Basically, I figure if I could use it with JAWS on a
computer that could barely support JAWS and with hardly any understand of
using JAWS, we should be able to get people up and running.

I do know that many, many in the blind community use SKYPE but they have to
install scripts.

Again, just my personal opinion and we should basis our use off the majority
of members.

Do you think this will be at all limiting to those who are not that computer
savvy. Would the program we used before be easier.

With AIM, we used to have what are called "rooms" that we used for a writers
meeting. I'm not sure what the limit was but think at times we had up to 20
people in a room.

Does AIM, Skype and MSN messenger host more than
2-3 people at one time? That would be my only
concern is that we would be limited in the number
of people who could participate.

Jayne, hats off to you for getting the e-meeting
going. This was a great idea!

I also suggest looking into Skype as an option.
There are a couple ways of
doing it through that program I believe.

No they wouldn't be on the same day necessarily.
Phil's work schedule
changes each week and if weed technical assistance
with the system he set up
this would need to be on a day he could be around.
If we use other methods
there will be more flexibility. That is why the
week before the actual date
and time will be released.

What methods would you suggest trying out?

A. Computer Chats
1. The Kentucky Association of Blind Students will
set up a regular chat to
be held in the fourth week of every month. We
will release the date of the
chat the week previous to the week in which the
chat will be held. This is
so as to make sure Phil is available to set up the
main computer and monitor
the flow of traffic.

Will these be on the same day each time?

Will we use the same interface all the time or try
different methods each
time until we find the right one?

Will these have a specific topic or be open?
Personally, I think we should
have specific topics with at least one or two
board members to initiate and
keep the conversation going. Every so many months
we could have an open
topic.

Just some thoughts. I'll post more on the other
sections in separate
emails.

Cindy
