Compañeros Federacionistas:

Quiero dejarles saber lo más último de nuestra legislación HR 5734, acerca 
de los Coches Silenciosos.  En la actualidad tenemos treinta miembros de la 
Cámara de Representantes enumerados como copatrocinadores, y los 
Congresistas  Towns, y Stearns, han enviado una carta al Congresista  John 
Dingell, Oficial  del Comité de la  Energía y Comercio, pidiéndole una 
audiencia acerca de  este proyecto de ley.

Debemos aumentar el Apollo de los copatrocinadores en esta legislación para 
demostrar al oficial Dingell que esta qüestión es importante para los 
miembros de la cámara. Los miembros del congreso se irán en receso de día 
del recordatorio de los Veteranos, Memorial Day, el viernes  23 de mayo.  Me 
agradaría que tuviéramos cincuenta copatrocinadores antes del comienzo del 
receso, por lo que, les estoy pidiendo que llamen a su miembro del congreso,

Muchacho golpeado por Coche Híbrido; la mamá  dice que él no lo oyó viniendo

Era algo que nunca se le había ocurrido a Jane Flannigan, hasta que  recibió 
una llamada el domingo que su hijo de ocho años había sido  golpeado por un 
coche mientras iba montado en bicicleta con un amigo.

Owen Erickson no fué lastimado gravemente, aunque él terminó arriba en la 
capilla del coche. Pero cuando el conductor del coche movió su Toyota Prius 
de la calle a la acera, Flannigan notó algo. " Vi el coche., pero no pude 
oír nada." Entonces ella recolectó, sobre el vehículo híbrido que funciona 
en energía de batería. "Este es totalmente silencioso."

Ahí fué cuando Flannigan cayó en cuenta, que Owen nunca oyó el Prius antes 
de que éste cortara delante de él.  "Ciclistas, corredores, cualquiera 
afuera en la calle,  pienso que es una qüestión enorme de seguridad," dijo 
ella.

Ella no es la única.  El mes pasado, legislación fué introducida en la 
Cámara de Representantes  de los Estados Unidos la cual podría eventualmente 
requerir que híbridos emitan una cantidad mínima de ruido.

Esta legislación es una  prioridad para la Federación Nacional de Ciegos, 
quien cree que los Híbridos son una amenaza verdadera para los que confían 
en el ruido de los coches para mantenersen seguros.

" Estos coches silenciosos que son muy difíciles de oír en el flujo normal 
de actividad en el juego diario al aire libre, son un peligro de seguridad," 
dice Jennifer Dunnam, presidenta de la afiliada de la Federación Nacional de 
Ciegos de Minnesota. "La gente ciega depende de su oído para saber lo que el 
tráfico está haciendo."

Toyota no ha tomado una posición respecto a la legislación, pero está 
consciente de las preocupaciones detrás de ella. "Tenemos que retroseder y 
mirar," dijo John Hanson, el encargado nacional de Toyota, calidad de 
comunicaciones ambientales, y seguridad., él Prius se alínea tercero entre 
los modelos de Toyota en ventas, detrás de Camry y del Corolla, según 
Hanson.

Flannigan no le echa la culpa al conductor del Prius por golpear a su hijo, 
puesto que  Owen condujo su bicicleta por delante, en frente de su coche, 
pero ella corta a su hijo una cierta holgura. "Estamos acondicionados a oír 
ruidos de coches," ella dice. "Esto es  una gran qüestión de seguridad."
