I was born in Colombia South America, and my schooling was at Our Lady of
Knowledge elementary school for the blind which was ran by a French order of
nuns.
In many instances, parents of blind children abandon their blind girls at
the school, and the parents were never to be heard from again.

Braille books, arriving from Spain, were very scarce, but during recess, the
nuns would gather us up together to read for entertainment.

Instructional Braille textbooks for education were nonexistent. Therefore,
the sisters, and some legally blind students would dictate the textbooks to
us, and that's how I became very proficient in Braille.

My family was made up of Polish immigrants, Holocaust survivors. My loving
parents were no more prepared than others to deal with a blind child, but at
my Aunt Frieda's insistence, in 1964, at the age of fourteen, my mother 
brought me
to America for a better future, and I live with Aunt Frieda, and Uncle Mark.
Their son Gary and daughter Doris have always been like brother, and sister
to me. Nevertheless, during those years, I was homesick. A letter to and
from Colombia, took 15 days to arrive. So, for my birthday, Aunt, through
the American and Colombian telephone operators, set up an expensive call to
my parents. The connection was terrible.

Furthermore, during those years, my sisters Perla, and Diana, moved to
Israel, a country I have visited twice.

I lived in Massachusetts, and benefited from going to Perkins School for the
Blind.

After graduation from American International College in Springfield,
Massachusetts, with a degree in Spanish literature, my family, and I move to
California where I was hired as a Staffing Clerk, and worked in the
environment of a Federal Employment Information Center. I was required on a
daily basis to interact with the public providing employment, retirement,
and veteran's information, utilizing current Office of Personnel Management
laws, regulations, and operating procedures.

I provided Spanish translation and established accurate, clear 
communication.

I wrote  letters, prepared mailers and sent publications in response to 
public inquiries about employment.

In 2003, I moved from California to Nevada to be close to family.

Here, I am secretary for the Northern Nevada, NFB, chapter.
