Hello Bryan,
I use Sound Forge for recording audio from the Web. Depending on the
encoding type and the server I use Sound Forge 5.0 or Audio Studio 8.0. I
found that when I used Audio Studio 8.0 I experienced screen stutter when
recording MP3 streams so use 5.0 instead. I listen to the stream with
Windows Media Player and turn the volume down to prevent distortion, and
clipping and record the audio with Sound Forge.
There are several programs which permit you to play and record Web audio
from within the applications themselves. They bypass the sound card to do
this and the results can be great. I believe they install their own audio
generator so what you're streaming can be heard and recorded and are often
the method of choice. Hope this helps.
