There were lots of over laps. As I pointed ut in a previous article you could Telnet into our existing BBS for a number of years. Plus BBS's file areas, messages areas, echos, usenet news groups, on-line services like Compuserve and AOL, FTP, on-line forums, etc. are all different ways of doing similar things. At its most basic level the internet is just a vehicle for distributing different kinds of services, which could include a BBS or its derivative.
