[Nfb-web] convention pledge audio on Web

Hello Milton,

I'm copying this message to Heather Field and Mike Seay of Tennessee as
their affiliate Web Site is currently under construction and we're in the
process of selecting audio content from the 2006 NFBTN Convention to include
on the Web Site. She wrote me an excellent response to this question. With
her permission I'll share it with you all later on.

Have you worked with .asx files. If you can give me a primmer and tell
me how to set them up so I can use them for streaming links as is done on
the National Web Site I'll appreciate that very much.

I believe I'm on the right track as well as although fundraising activities
are a major part of keeping this organization moving forward the fact that
someone's pledge information, or auction bid could be on-line indefinitely
and that convention audio will be uploaded indiscriminately can be
intimidating to some and could cause folks not to participate in the pledge
drive during conventions due to this fact not to mention possible legal
ramifications an placing the safety of our members in jeopardy.

Heather made an excellent point about selecting audio content for an NFB
Web Site. Her basic premise is that if it's not historically significant it
doesn't belong on the Web Site. This is the basic rule which is followed
when the audio cassette recordings of past national conventions are
produced. If anyone wants to order one of them to get an idea of how they're
created they can be ordered from the national office or purchased during the
national convention. They cost $25.00 per set. I believe we now have them
going all the way back to the 1950s so there's a lot of NFB sound to be
heard if you purchase them all. I'll leave Heather to speak for herself once
I receive permission from her to post her response to my questions here.
Talk to you later.

Peter, I think you have it right.

The only things that should be archeived on a website that streams the
content should be the introduction of the speaker, the speaker, and
questions to the peaker. It probably would be best to convert all your audio
files to MP3 and at a bit rate between 22000 and 44100 in order that it will
play back in most portable media players.

I would suggest that on this page you have a link to play the file online
and another link to download the file to the local computer.

If you need further help and suggestions, I'm here and can help.

Good afternoon everyone,

One area to be discussed during the Webmasters Committee meeting at
convention is what audio is suitable for placing permanently on our Web
Sites and what is not. I'm dealing with this issue as I'm readying some
audio to be uploaded to one of our affiliate Web Sites. Part of the banquet
is taken up with an auction, and what sounds to me like a PAC Plan pledge
drive. All of the banquet proceedings were initially streamed to the Web
including the auction and the pledge drive. When we're talking about placing
such content as pledge drives and their kin on-line I believe we're dealing
with sensitive information as on-line stockers and wood-be thieves would
have an idea of our members finances, and if they can figure out where
they're from could find these individuals and God only knows what could
happen. If the Internet is to be used to raise funds for our organization it
should be done in a way that allows individuals, organizations, and
corporations to contribute to our work, but does not disclose sensitive
financial information of our members, or threatens their security. I'm
talking about the PAC Plan and other pledge drives that often occur during
state, or even National Convention Banquets, and other events.

Here's my take on what to do in this situation based on the information
we've seen in the complete recordings of our organization's past
conventions. All door prize announcements, and financial information plus
audio anomalies are removed from the recordings. The entire financial
reports given on the last day of general sessions is not included in these
recordings. Based on this and pure gut instinct my inclination is to remove
all such content from the convention audio archives to prevent unwanted
disclosure of the organization's finances at any level, and to protect our
members from criminal activity. I'll appreciate other feedback as I'm
cleaning these up and readying them to be uploaded to the server. Take care,
and have a great weekend.

Peter Donahue
