Dear Melissa,
Who said you can't work with horses? You've been talking with the wrong people, Hon. Diane Starin is totally blind and runs what she calls "a horse hotel" in Northern California; done it for years. She boards them, trains them, teaches riding, and other good things for a horse rancher. She is past president of a national group in the NFB--

I'm glad you found this listserv of the National Federation of the Blind so you will get modern data on what blind people can do and are doing. Now if you can get to our national convention in Dallas this July, you will meet tons of people that are doing now what you most likely were told couldn't be done.

Melissa,
You are not nothing. You are still someone, you just have to find alternatives for how you do things in the world. You can still cook, clean, operate any device you wish, be it a TV, stereo, computer, dishwasher...whatever.
There are centers you can go to learn not only the skills of blindness, but also the confidence to carry on your life without being able to see.
There are others on this list who will have very similar things to say.
We're all here to help. If you have any questions, feel free to write me privately, if you want. Blindness isn't the end of the world or of your life, it's just a transition is all.

What's up my name is Melissa I have a 4 year old child. I am 27 years old I lost my sight 2 years ago and I am in the process of learning how to read all the braille that there is to learn and I do not think I will ever get that done but I sure am going to try! I love the outdoors I used to train horses and work with a vet before I lost my sight but now I am nothing. If anyone knows how I can get started again I am open to suggestions. I have found it very hard and heart breaking when people turn you away when they find out you can not see. I am probably the most bubbly, people person you could ever talk to and I am always willing to talk to anyone any time anywhere. I always thought we where all equal.
Peace out, Melissa
