Dear Dar,
There is no standardized method at this time for these signals.
Some have the buttons on power poles where you find the buttons most of the
time now and some place them on a shorter smaller pole near the curb cut so
they can be used by the blind and even people in wheelchairs. It also
places you closer to the street and curb so that you can begin your crossing
right away as the signal changes.
This lets you use the sides of the curb cut to line up on crossing the
street.
Also the signals, when the buttons are pressed also gives you more time to
get across the street in case you are 85 and pushing a walker.
The vibrating button signals make more sense to me and don't interfere with
my hearing that very soft sound of a car slowing down to make that right on
red.
I can support vibratory signals over audible ones.
I plan on using my skills and hearing to get me across the street safely not
beepers or even vibrators.
